Breathwork, what it does and why classical ratios matter.
Breathwork, or प्राणायाम pranayama, is one of the few practices that pulls unbroken from a 3,000-year Ayurvedic and yogic tradition and holds up under modern vagal-tone, HRV and cortisol measurement. The classical ratios are not decorative. They map to specific physiological effects. This piece explains what happens in the body, why the ratios were chosen, and where pranayama sits alongside meditation.
Part 1. The classical ratios, and what they do at the physiological level.
The classical pranayama ratios (1:4:2 for inhale, hold, exhale, and its slower and quicker variations) were not chosen because someone liked the maths. They were chosen because thousands of years of accumulated practice found that these specific ratios reliably produced specific states. The modern research on breathwork, once you strip out the wellness-industry noise around it, tells you why.
A slower breathing pace, particularly around 5.5 to 6 breaths per minute, moves the body into the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system. This is the branch responsible for rest, digestion, immune function, and recovery. Heart rate variability, which is one of the most useful single biomarkers of nervous-system health, rises measurably within a few minutes of paced slow breathing. Cortisol drops. Vagal tone (the responsiveness of the vagus nerve, which carries the parasympathetic signal) improves. This is not a placebo response. It is a mechanical effect of the breath rate on the baroreceptor reflex and the way the vagus nerve modulates heart rate.
The classical hold at the top of the inhale (कुम्भक kumbhaka) does something distinct. It temporarily raises intrathoracic pressure and CO2 tolerance, which trains the body to handle mild hypercapnia calmly. The long exhale (रेचक rechaka) is what actually triggers the parasympathetic dominance; the exhale, not the inhale, is the vagal lever. This is why the ratio is 1:4:2 rather than 1:2:1. The classical practice knew, empirically, that the exhale needs to be longer than the inhale for the state to settle.

Part 2. Bhramari and alternate-nostril breathing, mechanism plainly.
भ्रामरी Bhramari pranayama, the humming-bee breath, involves a long humming exhale with a partially closed glottis. The mechanism is the acoustic vibration of the humming, which travels through the sinus cavities and vagal fibres in the throat. Small studies show measurable increases in nitric oxide production during Bhramari, which improves vascular function and immune signalling. The humming exhale extends the exhale phase in a way that most people find easier than counting, which is why it is often the first pranayama introduced to a nervous beginner.
Alternate-nostril breathing, नाडी शोधन nadi shodhana, alternates the airflow between left and right nostrils across each breath cycle. The classical explanation is that it balances the two sides of the subtle nervous system. The modern explanation is that switching nostrils changes cerebral hemispheric dominance in a small but measurable way, and the slow deliberate pace of the practice is what does the parasympathetic work. Both explanations point in the same direction. The effect is real. HRV rises, breath rate settles, and most people report a calm alertness rather than a sleepy relaxation.

Part 3. Pranayama or meditation? Both, with different jobs.
The question comes up often enough to answer it directly. Pranayama and meditation are not competing practices. They do different things and typically work best in sequence.
Meditation trains the attention. It teaches the mind to notice its own patterns, to hold a chosen object of attention (breath, sensation, mantra) without wandering off, and to sit with whatever arises without needing to fix it. The benefits accumulate over years and land primarily in the domain of psychological resilience, emotional regulation, and self-awareness.
Pranayama trains the physiology. It uses the breath as a direct lever on the autonomic nervous system to shift state (from stressed to calm, from foggy to alert, from restless to settled) within minutes rather than years. The benefits are immediate and measurable, but they are state changes, not trait changes.
The classical sequence is pranayama first, then meditation. Ten minutes of pranayama settles the nervous system into a state where meditation becomes possible in a way that sitting cold from a stressed day does not. Skipping the pranayama and going straight to meditation is why so many beginners quit after two weeks convinced they "can't meditate." They can. The nervous system wasn't ready.
